- for doctoral and post-doctoral students to do research in the fields of earth and environment, health, key technologies, structure of matter, transport and space at a Helmholtz Association Research Centres
- Age requirement: below 32 for doctoral candidates pursuing PhD in Germany and below 36 for those who want to do a research in Germany towards a PhD in Malaysia
- for post-doctoral students, they must have completed their doctorate in 2003 or 2004
